Review by Nexus 6: Umwelt inaugurates this month another of his New Flesh sublabel in form of a huge huge 4x12" pack in extremely limited edition (50 copies and no repress). After the experimental / ambient styled NFLab and the electro oriented NFRemix, here comes the NFLimited subdivision. Refine collection of 12 rare yet inescapable tracks taken from the French producer live acts between 2007 and 2009 plus brand new tunes, the "Inhuman Series Vol. 1to 4" release sums up Umwelt's musical universe ranging from Rave, New Beat and Indus early styles to movies such like War Of The Worlds, Metropolis or The Day Earth Stood Still just to name a few. As a defender of the environment, he uses to expose in his outputs the way humanity is destroying Nature through an instantly recognizing industrial sound and this outing is no different. Much more advanced than many current artists, Umwelt music is always in demand for an imminent behavior change via a collective realization or the arrival of new species on Earth to educate mankind. In this context, the "Inhuman Series" kicks off with "Shaking The World", an uncompromising dancefloor burner based upon a hard kick, impressive modulations programming and relentless rhythm. Tone is given as the first notes of deep "Select The Future" drop, introducing an intelligent combination of cosmic frequencies, atmospheric layers, galactic melodies and vocals taken from the Space Conquest. My favorite! "Mission Of Gravity" serves up another cutting edge jam with futuristic strings over a menacing beat while downtempo "Bellatrax", opening the second vinyl, immerses the listener into darkness. Introspective, unhealthy, apocalyptic, the track is an astonishing juxtaposition of evil and psychotic laments that will please any ufologist waiting for a sign from the Universe. Gloomy as hell! Mash up of drums and bass, clinic "Dying Inside" will remind of Plastikman early works on Plus 8, but with a deep, syncopated and despair approach. Retro "The World Disorder" returns on the dancefloor thanks to a strong beat and some vintage synth flights. Captivating "The Dancers At The End Of Night" in overture of the third EP keeps the pressure alive, merging nice arpeggio sequences to intriguing melodies while synthetic "Quest Beyond The Stars" propels us far away into the galaxy on an exploration mission. Next up is timeless "The Last Starship From Earth", a superb oldschoolish anthem that reveals Umwelt's disco roots. Superb! Future classic "The Left Hand Of Darkness" offers another adrenaline rush of Electrobotic Bass that progressively bring you into an apocalyptic world surrounded by infectious vibes, subsonic bass and nasty modulations. Definitely not for the fainted hearts! "Cydonia" delivers a mental slaughter based upon compressed bass kicks, incredible grooves, masterful beats and mind blowing distortions. Finally "Valley Of Death" concludes the record with Sci-Fi effects over a smooth yet depressed melody. Fully illustrated with four digital alien characters by your truly, the "Inhuman Series" features the very best of Umwelt and takes place in the right prolongation of his "Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation" album published in 2006. Darkness is the key word of this compilation. For those who know!.

Cultivated Electronics moves into its 10th release and second of 2012 with an EP from long standing Dutch Electro pioneer Frank De Groodt under his Sonar Base alias. This is the 3rd landing from Sonar Base whose legendary first album Sonar Bases 1 - 4 was released on U Trax in 1995 before his second release Beyond Hoag's Object II on Daz Qualye's SCSI-AV Imprint 10 year's later in 2005. Frank started out on Djax records in 1994 with multiple releases as The Operator and Optic Crux before his more recent releases as Fastgraph on Klakson. We Attack Before Dawn EP gives a nod to the mid 90's Electro sound of Underground Resistance with 3 killer cuts from Sonar Base and a remix from CE label head Sync 24.

I’ve never done an LP before . . . . . which is strange cos over the years I’ve been quite prolific.

I suppose I’ve always struggled for a common theme which might link tracks together, cos thats what an LP is, it should flow as a single entity. Now I have a theme, and it’s kinda just taken the passage of time for me to realise, that the period when these tracks were written, was a notable one, and I had a sound then, which I just don’t now. It was born out of a desire to do something different, mostly written in an out-house come ramshackle lean-to made out of old pallets, its a miracle any of this music happened at all. 2 coats and -8C at 3am didn’t put me off, as condensation dripped from the plastic roof on to the laptop. I eventually had my reward, becoming a regular fixture in the electro room @ Atomic Jam, Birmingham UK. This is a collection of the music created along the way, by someone driven by a need to be different, to push the boundaries of electro and not be drawn in to the fickle come and go of fads and trends.

Nowadays the art of the LP is seemingly becoming lost, with the things becoming shorter and shorter, and containing no ‘filler’. The question of whether or not an LP is better with ‘filler’ is a questionable one. I know that its always a thing of curiosity that techno artists foray into all sorts of weird and wonderful areas when building their ‘concept’ LP. Jeff Mills jazz anyone? These fillers sometimes seem like the ‘art’ that glues the other tracks together, and it can get a bit pretentious. So I’ve not done that, there were things that I could have put on, but they don’t truly represent that time, or even what I do. Thats what this LP is, its representative, its full on from beginning to end (there’s no jazz on it) and it should be, because thats how things are.
