The Stone Roses

Okay. Someone please explain the fascination with this group and their music. I just have never been able to understand the hype regarding their music, their look, and their supposed importance. Culturally they never featured on my 'cultural road map'.

What am I missing?

It's a bit of a north-south thing to an extent I think. I'd never even heard of them before going to Leeds Uni in 1990. They were played everywhere while I was up there, but I never really got into them myself. These days, I don't mind them, but can't get that enthusiastic about them. It's all a bit too jingly-jangly guitars and folky singing for my taste.

My rhymes are so potent that in this small segment I made all of the ladies in the area pregnant.

Debatable G - my mates loved them. They all live in Kent & have followed them since the birth of Indie & all that Madchester mayhem..........(good laugh all that )

Brownie can't sing but he is somewhat of an enigma

And you went to Leeds Uni? I bet you went to Jumbo & Crash for your vinyl too mate

I really like some of their tunes. Back then, I had ZERO interest in guitar music; hated it. But as I've got older my taste has grown more eclectic and I now really appreciate a lot of rock music. I think they have a unique sound and Ian Brown's a charismatic frontman (some of his solo stuff is excellent too). Good song writer.
They're an excellent band and I'm looking forward to seeing them at V in August.

Well, obviously if you don't like something, nobody can convince you otherwise. There's nothing to explain really: you either like their sound or you don't.

Which bands do you like?

I appreciate your point Beagle, but by asking the question it is always worth considering that someone might be able to offer a view that allows for a new perspective or new undertstanding to develop. Just being open minded, and possibly thinking in terms of shades of grey. I could not understand the apparent importance of Elliot's 'The Wasteland' until I read something else that made me reconsider my original view - although I'm certainly not equating the Roses with Elliot!

Well, went yesterday to see the Roses and i can quite categorically say it was one of the greatest nights of my life, absolutely better than i ever expected as they were renowned for fucking up what should have been exceptional gigs ........ 17 years down the line they are musically better than they ever were, yes Ian Brown doesn`t have the greatest voice, he`s the first to admit that BUT as a frontman he`s superb, remember without Liam Gallagher copying everything about an early Ian Brown there would have been no Oasis.

It`s hard to put a finger on as to why they are so loved by so many of a certain generation ........ for a band who couldn`t be in the same as each other, Brown & Squire, to the fasting selling concerts in UK history, playing to 225,000 like minded people is something i don`t think any other band could pull off, maybe the only band who could pull it off and even then i`m not sure they would and they certainly never will are The Smiths ........ and Take That.

I strolled in at 1.30 this morning pissed, covered in mud but was as happy as a pig in shit.
