First of all, great to be amongst folks with superb taste in music - early 80's soul/funk is my real passion and there are some wicked tunes here !

Thought I'd throw a few into the mix, seeing as we're allowed to err on the funk side of things :

The maestress ! Sharon Redd:

Followed by the Maestro - the man James Williams. The epitome of 80's funk - nuff said:

Then an ultra-classic - the man Toney Lee: not Phats & Small lol.

Then a slower jam with so much soul - instantly recognisable by the great Thelma Houston:

For some P-Funk, a George bomb: best played LOUD !

Lastly I thought I'd drop a pre-80's disco funk track that just makes you wanna dance on the tables : DO IT GENE !

Thelma Houston is best known for her 70s classic disco cover of ''Don't Me Leave This Way''. It was originally written by the legendary songwriting team, Gamble & Huff. This song soars through the gospel music-honed vocals of the Leland, Mississippi native.
She also sung the original "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning", later covered by T-Empo:

This is one of the very very few cases that i prefer the cover than the original-i also love so much Juliet Roberts' voice!

''You Used To Hold Me Tight'' was written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and it was a hit for Thelma back in '84, especially in R&B charts. Absolutely fantastic groove!

''Out Of My Hands'' was comeback song from her "Throw You Down" album in 1990. Fine example of the late 80s/early 90s swing beat era of R&B music. Still like it!

She resurfaced with the release of her album, A Woman's Touch in 2007.

Great post Binalog on Thelma ! And I agree about the cover version. Juliet Roberts' vocals are lush and airy.

Lj some mo' fo' ya !

Crackin' tune this one - and check out ICE-T in his early days in the vid !:

An absolute stonker of a classic O'Jays tune:

Anyone who's heard Sgt. Slick's 'White Treble/Black Bass' will recognise this Ray Parker tune:

This one doesn't contain synth beats, but is such a dope tune it deserves to be here: (not so sure what the video's about mind ? )

Back to some classic funk by the masterful Paul Hardcastle - one of my faves this one. Has been ever since I was a youngun' !

I know this last one is quite recent, but it's a little played Luther tune that deserves it's spot:

Yo FORCE, you're definitely a soul m8 my brother! "Put Our Heads Together": wow! i can't tell you how much i love this 12"! And "Say You Love Me Girl"... clllasssic rare-groove! As for "Fly By Night" it brings so many sweet memories...

Here are some more from me:

the last Temptations fine tune; what a gem!!!

i posted earlier here "She's The Master Of The Game", for me the ultimate RJS tune. here's "In The Night", another great song by a great voice!

and an absolute classic 80s soul/funk tune by Robert Brookins. Robert sadly passed away last year, of a heart attack. he was only 44... may this excellent singer rests in peace...

Just how did i forget this excellent 80s groove?!

and one by Curtis Hairston, who had a succesful 80s career both solo and as a member of Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens Band (aka B. B. & Q. Band), but, unfortunately, he died too young, at the age of 35, in 1996. definitely a very talented singer...

Binalog your taste is fly mate ! Lovin' all them tunes. I'm sittin' here at work playing them as loud as me laptop will let me lol. Superb thread. In a similar vein to those don 80's tracks :

First up, one of my very favourite funk groups, and right up there with the best to emerge from good ole' Blighty - Total Contrast:

Then a killer tune from Sherrick - and sadly another singer that passed away at the age of 41.

Gonna go and round up some more goodies.
