on oldschool stuff the carrier is often just a simple sawtooth patch played on a minimoog with the filter open. imo, the simpler the better when it comes to carrier waves. a couple oscillators detuned can do the trick, i often use two oscs, one detuned by an octave. try eqing the synth before it goes into the vocoder too. i also sometimes add a little chorus after the vocoder to fatten things up. as with anything else, you ears are the best judge. play around until you find something pleasing to you.

yes yes yes, I was just gonna say that - chorus will definitely fatten up the sound. Brad, different synths have their own character of sawtooth, square, triangle waveforms, so it would be trial and error. But I would say sawtooth for definite is the basic bones of a robotic voice!

Hmm I don't know what would be the "best" For me it's constant experimentation..I have loads of patches saved in my combinators which are all different... But I will offer this, I like to detune my carriers, sometimes I double the channels up, pre eq, pre effects like distortion and like mentioned before chorus is nice.. Even multiple carriers often different, merged to the input(saw and triangle, or sine) etc... I say EXPERIMENT brothaaaaaaaaaaaa, thats the the best advice I think, use your imagination and have fun...

I just shove a saw wave into the vocoder and start making noise lol !
For real tho it's good to experiment with diff. waves.
For a funky effect, try running a gated pad thru the vocoder, or an arpeggiated riff.
Its all good !
Oh and the most important thing i found is EQ, can make or break a good vocal (and as the other chaps said chorus too)
I won't even start on running vocoders thru bit crushers and filters lol
